CEM Quarantine

CEM Import Quarantine At UC Davis

The Center for Equine Health is now accepting imported mares at our new Templeton Farms location just south of Paso Robles. We will accommodate requests for CEM quarantine at our Davis location on a case-by-case basis. We anticipate welcoming stallions to the Templeton Farms location in the future.  We are currently taking reservations for stallions at our Davis facility. Pricing is the same for both facilities. Please contact us at cehadmin@ucdavis.edu or (530) 752-6433 (option #2) for more information.

The UC Davis Center for Equine Health serves as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's California Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) Quarantine and Treatment Station. It is our honor to serve the equine industry with this important protection protocol. For decades, the CEM Quarantine and Treatment Station has been meeting the needs of horse owners and we are proud of our standing as a quarantine facility that has not released a positive animal throughout our history.

Located on California's central coast, our new Templeton Farms location is conveniently located within 200 miles of the Los Angeles west coast entry port. Our specially-trained staff provide each horse with tailored personal attention in a calm and comfortable atmosphere. We make every effort to facilitate a smooth process for our clients and on-time release of quarantined horses.

Quarantine Rate

The price of $9,690 per stallion includes board for the days required for the CEM testing protocol to be conducted. To complete testing of each stallion, two local mares must be maintained and tests performed to establish their CEM-free status. Ovariectomized mares (mares that have had their ovaries removed) are used for test breeding so that they can be synchronized easily and no pregnancy can result. They are bred to the stallion, then cultured and a blood sample is taken to establish that no CEM bacteria have been transmitted from the stallion to the mare. This procedure is essential to validate a negative result.

The price of $3,390 per mare includes board for the days required for the CEM testing protocol to be conducted.  If there is a foal accompanying the mare, there is an additional price of $740. Mares are tested and cultured periodically throughout their quarantine period.

Board beyond the days required is $71.00 per day.  Prior or necessary treatment with antibiotics or positive test results may prolong the required stay time.

A signed contract and the quarantine fees are required to secure your horse's reservation at our quarantine facility.  Payment may be made by check or credit card.  If additional charges are incurred during quarantine, the owner will be notified in advance and payment will be expected before the horse is released from the facility.

Please call for a reservation at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance of your horse's expected arrival.  To make a reservation or for more information, please contact the CEH office at (530) 752-6433 (option #2) or e-mail cehadmin@ucdavis.edu.
